Couples Therapy in British Columbia: What to Expect and How to Get Started

MACP, CCC · Published · Updated

If you're considering couples therapy, you're probably in one of two places: things have reached a breaking point, or you can feel them heading there. Either way, reaching out takes courage — and it's worth it.

If you are in British Columbia and ready to book, the online couples counselling in BC page has the fee, who you would see, MSP and direct billing in one place.

As a couples therapist who has completed Level 1 and Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy, working online with clients across British Columbia and in five other provinces, I want to walk you through what couples therapy actually looks like — because the unknown can be a real barrier to getting started.

Signs Your Relationship Could Benefit from Couples Therapy

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Here are some common signs that couples therapy could help:

  • → The same arguments keep happening — and nothing ever gets resolved
  • → You feel more like roommates than partners
  • → Trust has been broken and you're unsure how to rebuild it
  • → Communication feels impossible — you shut down or blow up
  • → Intimacy — emotional or physical — has faded
  • → A major life change (new baby, job loss, move) has strained the relationship
  • → You're wondering whether to stay or leave

Any of these are valid reasons to reach out. Couples therapy isn't a sign that your relationship has failed — it's a sign that you're willing to fight for it.

What Happens in a Couples Therapy Session?

Your first session is about understanding your relationship — not fixing it on the spot. I'll ask both partners to share their perspective on what's been happening. There's no blame, no taking sides. My role is to understand the patterns between you, not to decide who's right.

In the Gottman Method, we begin with an initial assessment over 2-3 sessions: a joint session, then an individual session with each partner, followed by a feedback session where I share what I've observed and we build a plan together.

From there, sessions focus on learning new skills — how to communicate without escalating, how to repair after a fight, how to rebuild trust, and how to turn toward each other instead of away.

The Gottman Method: Evidence-Based Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method is built on over 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. They studied thousands of couples to identify the specific behaviors that predict whether a relationship will succeed or fail.

One of the central concepts is the "Four Horsemen" — four communication patterns that, if left unchecked, can seriously damage a relationship (our guide to the Four Horsemen and their antidotes has an example of each):

Criticism — Attacking your partner's character instead of addressing the specific issue
Contempt — Speaking with disrespect, mockery, or superiority (the Gottmans describe it as the strongest predictor of divorce in their research)
Defensiveness — Deflecting responsibility and counter-attacking instead of listening
Stonewalling — Shutting down and withdrawing from the conversation entirely

In therapy, we identify which of these patterns are showing up in your relationship and replace them with healthier alternatives. The goal isn't to eliminate conflict — conflict is normal — but to change how you fight.

In British Columbia, couples can work with me or with Alison Shaji, RCC, who has also completed Level 1 and Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy; fees and booking are on the Gottman Method couples counselling online in BC page.

Can Couples Therapy Work Online?

Yes. Research reviewed by CMHA Ontario found virtual mental health care to be efficacious in comparison with face-to-face care. In many ways, it's more convenient — both partners can join from wherever they are, there's no commute, and you can schedule sessions in the evening when it works for your life.

At TEO Counselling, all our couples sessions are virtual. We serve couples across British Columbia — in Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, Surrey, Kelowna, and everywhere in between — and online in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Newfoundland & Labrador. You just need a private space and a stable internet connection.

How Much Does Couples Therapy Cost in BC?

At TEO Counselling, couples sessions are $175 per 60-minute session. We also offer:

  • → A small number of reduced-fee spots are held — mention cost during the consultation
  • → Free 15-minute consultation — a no-pressure conversation to see if we're the right fit
  • → Insurance coverage — reimbursement depends on the designation your plan covers (CCC or RCC); check your plan's wording

We accept e-transfer and credit card payments. Check with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage before starting — we're happy to help you figure that out during your free consultation.

How to Choose the Right Couples Therapist in BC

Not all therapists are trained in couples work. When looking for a couples therapist, consider:

  • → Specific couples training — Ask about Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), or other couples-specific modalities
  • → Credentials — Look for CCC (Canadian Certified Counsellor) or RCC (Registered Clinical Counsellor) in BC
  • → Fit — Both partners need to feel comfortable with the therapist. A free consultation helps you assess this
  • → Availability — Evening and weekend sessions matter when both partners work during the day
