Online Therapy & Marriage Counselling for Calgary

Rush-hour drives and office hours shouldn’t decide whether you start therapy in Calgary. TEO Counselling connects you with a counsellor online — trauma, anxiety, and marriage counselling on evenings and weekends, in English or Arabic.

Free 15-minute consultation · No referral needed · Seven days a week

Online therapy in Calgary, at a glance. TEO Counselling provides therapy across Calgary, every session online; there is no Calgary office. Alberta clients see Mohamad Shabib, MACP, CCC (#11249205, CCPA), who works in English and Arabic, or Rola Shbib, a Registered Social Worker, RSW (Ontario), with the OCSWSSW (#866715). Appointments run 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm Mountain Time, seven days a week. Individual sessions are $150 and couples sessions $175, each 60 minutes, with no intake or assessment fee. Alberta Health Care does not cover counselling in private practice; every session comes with an insurance-ready receipt, and direct billing is available with Mohamad for Pacific Blue Cross and TELUS eClaims plans (Canada Life, Manulife). The first step is a free 15-minute consultation on a video call or a scheduled phone call, booked online, no referral needed.

A counsellor for Calgary — minus the commute

TEO Counselling is an online-only practice based in Nanaimo, BC, so there is no office to drive to in Calgary — no waiting room, no parkade, no crosstown traffic. You meet your counsellor online from home, a parked car on a lunch break, or anywhere with a door that closes.

Virtual care suits how this city runs. Shift rotations, hospital schedules, small businesses whose day never quite ends — our evening and weekend hours exist because a 2pm appointment is not realistic for every working Calgarian.

And if life moves you elsewhere, you keep the same counsellor — we work with clients across Alberta, BC, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

How we help Calgarians

Trauma & Anxiety Therapy

Evidence-based care for trauma, PTSD, panic, and anxious overthinking. Mohamad is EMDRIA-trained in EMDR and trained in Internal Family Systems (Levels 1–2) and CBT for Trauma — approaches that work with the nervous system rather than around it.

Couples & Marriage Counselling

Marriage counselling in Calgary shouldn’t require two people fighting traffic to the same office. Virtual sessions let you join from the couch — or two different postal codes. Gottman Method work (Levels 1–2) targets conflict cycles, trust repair, and the slow drift into roommate mode.

ADHD-Related Stress & Overwhelm

ADHD-related stress can spill over into the rest of life — missed deadlines, collapsing routines, procrastination shame, friction at home. We offer counselling support for the overwhelm and self-criticism underneath it. We do not diagnose or assess ADHD; that remains with your physician — therapy works alongside that care.

Meet your counsellors for Calgary

Mohamad Shabib, MACP, CCC

A Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC, a national certification with the CCPA), Mohamad works with trauma, anxiety, addictions, and couples. His training spans EMDR (EMDRIA-trained), Internal Family Systems (Levels 1–2), Gottman Method couples therapy (Levels 1–2), and CBT for Trauma. People reach out to him about PTSD and trauma, panic and anxious overthinking, grief and loss, addictions, and relationship strain. Sessions in English or Arabic, evenings and weekends.

Rola Shbib, BSW (Hons)

Rola Shbib, BSW (Hons), RSW (Ontario), works with individuals, not couples, so marriage counselling in Calgary is with Mohamad. Ask for Rola if grief, addiction or the aftermath of a crisis is what brought you here: her honours degree is in thanatology, and her background is crisis response, suicide prevention and community addiction services.

Marriage counselling in Calgary

For couples in Calgary, the work happens entirely online: you meet Mohamad — trained in the Gottman Method, Levels 1 and 2 — in 60-minute sessions at $175, with evening and weekend times that fit two working schedules.

The Gottman Method gives sessions a structure. Rather than refereeing this week’s argument, the work maps how the two of you handle conflict, repair after it, and stay connected in between — then builds specific skills where the pattern keeps breaking down. Couples work begins with an assessment phase before moving into focused work on the areas you choose together.

And because sessions are virtual, marriage counselling doesn’t depend on both of you reaching the same building. One partner at home in Cranston, the other still downtown or away for work — you each join the same video call from wherever you are. If evenings are your only overlap, sessions run as late as 10pm Calgary time.

What does online therapy for Calgary look like?

Online therapy for Calgary works in three steps: you book a free 15-minute consultation, meet your counsellor over a private Jane video link, and then attend 60-minute sessions from any quiet space in the city — no clinic, no commute.

You need three things: a device with a camera, an internet connection that holds, and a door that closes. If home is short on privacy, a parked car on a lunch break or an office room after hours works fine — and if none of those are easy to arrange, raise it at the consultation rather than after your first session. You see the same counsellor every time, so you never restart your story with a stranger.

Sessions run seven days a week from noon to 9pm Pacific — 1pm to 10pm in Calgary. A session after a shift ends, or once the kids are asleep, is an ordinary booking here rather than a special request.

Does Alberta Health Care cover counselling in Calgary?

No — the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan does not pay for private counselling or psychotherapy, so Calgary clients pay per session: $150 for a 60-minute individual session and $175 for a 60-minute couples session.

After every session you receive a receipt showing your counsellor’s name and credentials. Coverage depends on the credentials your plan recognizes — check for Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) or Registered Social Worker (RSW). Some health spending accounts reimburse counselling too, but the deciding factor is your plan’s own wording, so check which provider categories it lists before booking. A few reduced-fee spots are held for when cost is a barrier; asking about one at the free consultation is a normal question.

Cancellations need 24 hours’ notice. With that notice you simply reschedule; inside the window, or for a session nobody attends, the full fee is charged.

What you share in session stays between you and your counsellor, within limits that are explained before you start: a serious risk of harm to yourself or another person, a reasonable suspicion that a child needs protection, or a court order or subpoena for the records.

Common questions about counselling in Calgary

How do I find a therapist in Calgary?

You can book directly with TEO Counselling — no referral or doctor’s note needed. Start with a free 15-minute consultation, tell us what you’re dealing with, and we’ll talk through whether this approach fits what you need.

How much does counselling cost in Calgary?

Individual sessions are $150 per 60-minute session and couples sessions are $175 per 60-minute session. A small number of reduced-fee spots are held (if cost is a barrier, mention it during the consultation), and the initial consultation is always free. You receive a receipt after every session; coverage depends on the credentials your plan recognizes — check your plan’s details for Canadian Certified Counsellor or Registered Social Worker.

What’s the difference between therapy and couples counselling?

Individual therapy has one client: the sessions are about your history, your patterns and what you want to change, and the record is yours alone. Couples counselling has two clients — the relationship is the focus, both partners are on the call, and the counsellor works on the cycle between you rather than on either person separately; the record belongs to the two of you jointly. Some people do both, and the free consultation is where we sort out which fits what you are bringing.

Do you offer marriage counselling for Calgary couples?

Yes. Mohamad provides couples and marriage counselling using the Gottman Method (Levels 1 and 2 trained). Sessions run evenings and weekends, and each partner can join the video call from a different location — useful when shift work or travel keeps you apart.

How much does couples therapy cost in Calgary?

Couples therapy — marriage counselling by another name — is $175 per 60-minute session at TEO Counselling, online with Mohamad, who has completed the Gottman Method at Levels 1 and 2. The first step is a free 15-minute consultation, a small number of reduced-fee spots are held, and you receive a receipt after every session; whether a plan reimburses couples sessions depends on its own wording, so read yours before counting on it.

Is online therapy as effective as meeting in person?

Online sessions follow the same structure as office-based therapy — the same counsellor each week, the same approaches (EMDR, IFS, CBT for Trauma, Gottman Method couples work), the same confidentiality limits — with the commute removed. Whether the format suits you is something to test on the free consultation; some people find it easier to open up from their own space, and others take a session or two to settle into it.

Can you help with ADHD-related stress?

We support adults navigating the stress that can travel with ADHD — overwhelm at work, collapsing routines, procrastination guilt, and strain on relationships. We do not diagnose or assess ADHD; diagnosis stays with your physician or a qualified assessor, and counselling works alongside that care.

When are appointments available?

Appointments run seven days a week from 12pm to 9pm Pacific time — that is 1pm to 10pm in Calgary. We confirm times in Mountain time when you book.

Is there free counselling in Calgary?

Yes, with limits. Distress Centre Calgary offers free crisis counselling and a 24-hour line, 403-266-4357, that takes calls and texts. Through Community Connect YYC you can book online, day or night, with Calgary agencies; some sessions are free, some sliding-scale and some at a fee you choose. Calgary Counselling Centre, in person or online, says it has no financial barriers or waitlist. Each sets its own eligibility, so check before you book.
