Common questions
Do you have an office in Ontario?
No. TEO Counselling is an online-only practice based in Nanaimo, British Columbia, so there is no office in Ontario; the two clinicians who see Ontario clients both hold Ontario registrations. Someone in Thunder Bay or Kingston gets the same access as someone in Toronto, and it is why there is currently no waitlist.
Is therapy covered by OHIP?
Not in private practice — psychotherapy from an RP or RSW in private practice is not covered by OHIP anywhere in Ontario. The publicly funded exceptions are physician-delivered care and programs like the Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program. Otherwise, coverage comes through an extended health plan, an employee assistance programme, or private payment. Coverage depends on the credentials your plan recognizes — Mohamad is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the CRPO and Rola is a Registered Social Worker with the OCSWSSW, so check which of those your plan names.
How late can I book?
Sessions run until midnight Eastern time, seven days a week, because the practice operates on Pacific hours. Late-evening appointments are ordinary rather than exceptional. Mornings are not available — nothing starts before 3:00 pm your time.
Can I have sessions in Arabic?
Yes, with Mohamad Shabib, who works in English or Arabic — and you can move between the two mid-session if that is how the words arrive. Rola Shbib works in English.
What is the difference between a Registered Psychotherapist and a Registered Social Worker?
They are two separate Ontario colleges with different training routes, and both are recognised to provide psychotherapy in the province. In practice the difference that matters to you is what your insurance plan names and which clinician fits what you are bringing. That gets sorted on the consultation call.
How much does online therapy cost in Ontario?
Individual therapy is $150 and couples counselling is $175, per 60-minute session, and the initial 15-minute consultation is free. OHIP does not cover psychotherapy in private practice; coverage depends on the credentials your plan recognizes — check for Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or Registered Social Worker — and you receive a receipt after every session.
Is online counselling different from online therapy?
In Ontario the words are used almost interchangeably — but only some of them are protected. Psychotherapy is a controlled act and "psychotherapist" is a restricted title, while anyone may offer "counselling" without being registered at all. That is why the label matters less than the register: check that the person is registered with an Ontario college, whichever word their website uses.
How do I choose between a therapy app and a private practice?
Apps match you with a counsellor from a pool and can cost less; a private practice starts with a specific clinician you chose yourself and verified on a public register before booking. Some app counsellors are Ontario-registered too, and the register check works either way — the practical differences are choice, continuity, and how cleanly the receipt fits your extended health plan. The free 15-minute consultation exists so you can test that difference before spending anything.
Can I get therapy for free in Ontario?
Yes. The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program offers free CBT-based care to adults 18 and older with depression or anxiety-related concerns, BounceBack Ontario offers free phone coaching to anyone in Ontario aged 15 or older with no referral, and ConnexOntario (1-866-531-2600) can point you to local services at any hour. TEO's own sessions are private-pay, after a free 15-minute consultation.
Do you offer direct billing in Ontario?
Yes, with Mohamad Shabib. Direct billing is available with him for Pacific Blue Cross and for plans on the TELUS eClaims network, including Canada Life and Manulife — where your plan is one we can bill, you pay only the portion it does not cover. Rola Shbib is not on the direct-bill line; with her you pay per session and submit the receipt. Either way an insurance-ready receipt follows every session, and coverage depends on the credentials your plan recognizes — check for Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) or Registered Social Worker.
Are virtual therapy sessions worth it?
That depends on what you need from the hour. Online sessions remove the commute and open up evenings, you keep the same clinician wherever you are in the province, and the working relationship that carries the therapy is built over the screen rather than in a waiting room. What online counselling does not solve is a home with no private hour in it, and it is not the route to an assessment or a diagnosis, neither of which this practice provides. If you take the consultation on a video call rather than by phone, it doubles as a test of the format before you have paid for anything.
