Online therapy in Newfoundland and Labrador, at a glance. TEO Counselling provides therapy across Newfoundland and Labrador through online sessions with two clinicians: Mohamad Shabib, MACP, a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and Rola Shbib, BSW (Hons), RSW (Ontario). Individual sessions are $150 and couples sessions are $175, each 60 minutes, with appointments from 4:30 pm to 1:30 am Newfoundland Time (4:00 pm to 1:00 am in Labrador, on Atlantic Time), seven days a week. MCP, the provincial Medical Care Plan, does not cover counselling in private practice; whether an extended health plan reimburses depends on the designation it names — CCC or RSW, and every session comes with an insurance-ready receipt. The first step is a free 15-minute consultation, and evening and weekend appointments are routine. Direct billing is available with Mohamad for Pacific Blue Cross and TELUS eClaims plans (Canada Life, Manulife); with Rola you pay per session and submit the receipt. Coverage depends on the credentials your plan recognizes — check for CCC or RSW. See direct billing for the detail.

A Canadian Certified Counsellor Serving Newfoundland & Labrador

Mohamad Shabib, MACP, CCC, is a Canadian Certified Counsellor with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) — a national, voluntary certification, not a provincial licence. Sessions are available in English and Arabic.

How We Can Help

Why Online Therapy Works

Trauma work, including EMDR, and couples work both run online here, following the same structure they would in a room. Online sessions also mean you can keep the same therapist whether you live in downtown St. John's or a rural community — and appointments fit around work and family instead of traffic.

Who you would be working with

Sessions for Newfoundland and Labrador clients are with Mohamad Shabib, MACP, CCC or Rola Shbib, BSW (Hons), RSW (Ontario), and we confirm which on the free consultation call. Mohamad Shabib concentrates on trauma and relationships: Advanced EMDR through an EMDRIA-approved programme, Internal Family Systems Levels 1 and 2, the Gottman Method Levels 1 and 2 for couples, and CBT for Trauma Levels 1 and 2. He has also worked directly in concurrent trauma and addictions treatment.

Sessions are available in English and Arabic, and you can move between the two mid-session if that is how the words arrive.

One point of honesty about credentials, because it is the sort of thing that is easy to blur: the CCC designation is a voluntary national certification held through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, not a provincial licence. Counselling is not a regulated profession in Newfoundland and Labrador, which is precisely why the designation behind the person matters when you are choosing.

What sessions cost in Newfoundland and Labrador

Individual therapy is $150 per 60-minute session. Couples counselling is $175. The first conversation — 15 minutes, to work out whether this is a good fit — is free, and there is no referral needed to book it.

There is no provincial health-plan billing for counselling in Newfoundland and Labrador. Sessions are paid privately, and you receive an insurance-ready receipt after each one. Some extended health plans reimburse services provided by a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), but the amount and the wording differ from plan to plan, so it is worth checking your own booklet for the designation it names before your first session.

A small number of reduced-fee spots are held. If cost is the thing standing in the way, say so on the consultation call.

Free online programs in Newfoundland and Labrador

The province runs free online mental health programs, and for some people they are the right place to start. Bridge the gapp, the provincial government's free online resource, has self-guided programs and a service directory. Its TAO with a Counsellor program, free to residents aged 16 and older, pairs weekly online modules of about 30 to 60 minutes with a 10-to-20-minute check-in with a counsellor by phone, video or in person, usually over four to six weeks; you sign up through a local Mental Health and Addictions community office, and 8-1-1 can tell you which one is nearest.

If you are unsure which service fits, the Mental Health and Addictions Systems Navigator is at 709-752-3916 or 1-877-999-7589. TAO is a few weeks of guided skills work, so longer trauma work such as EMDR usually needs something more sustained.

What the first few sessions actually look like

On the free consultation you settle whether Mohamad or Rola is the better fit and which end of the evening window suits you. The first paid hour goes on background and what you want to change, not on deep work, and what to expect from online therapy covers how sessions run and where confidentiality stops (a risk of serious harm, a child protection concern or a court order).

Therapy in Newfoundland & Labrador: the practical details

Appointments for Newfoundland run from 4:30 pm to 1:30 am Newfoundland Time, seven days a week — half an hour earlier in Labrador, on Atlantic Time. There is no dressing that up: the practice runs on Pacific hours, the island is four and a half hours ahead, and the appointment window sits later here than in any other province served. Nothing starts before late afternoon, a 9:00 pm session in St. John's sits mid-window, and the last slots run past midnight. For some people that is the appeal — after work, after the house is quiet; for others it will not fit, and it is better to know that before booking.

Counselling is not a regulated profession in Newfoundland and Labrador: no counselling title is protected and no law restricts who may provide it, so the designation a therapist holds is the vetting — the province does not supply it.

Clients in this province are seen by Mohamad Shabib or Rola Shbib. Mohamad's designation is the Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), held through the CCPA with its code of ethics and complaints process; Rola's registration is held in Ontario, where her regulatory college oversees her practice.

Extended health plans here name the designations they reimburse, and plans differ in which designations they will accept. Read yours, or ask the insurer, before the first paid session.

Common questions

Do you have an office in St. John's?

No. TEO Counselling is online only — every session is online, anywhere in the province. For Newfoundland and Labrador in particular that is the point: someone on the Northern Peninsula or in Labrador City gets the same access as someone in St. John's, without a drive or a flight.

Is counselling covered by MCP?

No. Counselling and psychotherapy in private practice are not covered by MCP, and the same is true in the other provinces TEO serves. Coverage comes through extended health benefits, employee assistance programmes, or private payment. You receive a receipt after each session for your insurer.

How does the four-and-a-half-hour time difference work in practice?

Sessions run from noon until nine in the evening Pacific time, which is half past four in the afternoon until half past one in the morning in St. John's. The earlier part of that window is an ordinary evening for you — a six o'clock appointment your time is half past one in the afternoon on the coast.

Can I be seen if I live in Labrador?

Yes. Labrador is on Atlantic Time, half an hour behind the island, so the same window applies, shifted by thirty minutes. Sessions can run by phone rather than video where the connection makes video unreliable.

How quickly can I be seen?

There is currently no waitlist. The booking calendar shows real availability rather than an estimate, so you can see the next open consultation time before you book.
